Now that fashion month has gotten into full swing, here are some nails that definitely caught our attention during New York Fashion Week!
CND co-founder Jan Arnold created the nail looks (of which there were several, and only a few are shown here!) at The Blonds Fall 2013 show, which was inspired by old-school Hollywood horror. As a result, manicures featured Janet Leigh’s face from Hitchcock’s Psycho and a still of Jack Nicholson’s character from The Shining, among other extremely varied and dynamic nail designs (and lengths, as this show ranged from standard almond-shaped nails to talons sharpened to a point). Really fantastic mix that was perfectly in tune with the collection!
Keri Blair Walden for MAC Cosmetics created the nail look for Ruffian’s Fall 2013 show. The look was meant to be indicative of a Victorian lady in mourning, with black veils covering cameo-clad nails. A refreshing gothic lean if we ever saw one!
In a similar vein to Ruffian, Emerson Fall 2013 featured a lace-inspired look in a palette of porcelain white, soft cream and black. Done by Miss Pop for Orly, the nail look was actually meant to mimic a particular swatch of fabric from the collection. The nails were painted white, then a fishnet pattern was applied in a cream shade using a detailer brush, and floral details were added with a dotting tool.
Nails at Rebecca Minkoff’s Fall 2013 show were eye-catching and they were extremely simple to create, with several drops of five different polishes (specifically Essie polishes in Aruba Blue, Go Overboard, Blue Rhapsody, Penny Talk and As Gold As It Gets) being dropped on the nail and then swirled together with a small brush to create the oil slick effect.

IMAGE FASHION MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2013
As always, we are stoked to be a part of Lucian Matis’ runway shows. His collections are undeniably the most talked about each season and really, who wouldn’t want to be on a team with a man that high-fives his mom from the runway?!
The Spring 2013 collections were all about prints, checks, stripes and floral-inspired motifs. With prints being such a major focus, we decided to recreate the out-of-this-world abstract designs on the nails. Inspired by Moroccan tiles, the collection is breathtaking, dramatic and incredibly eye-catching.
Over the years we have gone to great lengths to bring Lucian’s collection to fingertips of his models. We always push our creativity to the limit and Lucian gives us full reign to create the perfect accessories that set off his collections. They say, “Fashion never sleeps,” and nor do manicurists when it comes to creating serious statement nails for the runway!
While it’s a lot of effort to have a working collaboration with a designer, the Tips team couldn’t be more thrilled to work with a designer like Lucian Matis, who is an absolute sweetheart!

While we patiently wait for fashion month to kick into high gear in North America, our attention was completely captivated by the Spring 2013 couture shows in Paris the past couple of weeks!
Many collections have been including very minimal colour on nails, which was all the more reason for the Tips team to interpret the collection patterns, prints and textures as inspiration for nail looks. Read on to see some extremely impressive skills splashed across our canvas of choice: the nail.
This look is inspired by Elie Saab’s Spring 2013 couture collection, which he aptly titled, “An Ode to Delicateness”. There is no arguing that the beaded lace dress in a soft, dusty blue shade with a lacy, nude hem is the epitome of delicate. We interpreted the nude hem as the nail tip and love the contrast of the overall look!
This look is inspired by Giambattista Valli’s Spring 2013 couture collection. While the look is black and white, it is anything but basic or boring. This leopard print opened the show, and while leopard has been everywhere on everything for quite some time now, the snow leopard spots felt like a renewed lease on the trend.
This look is also inspired by Giambattista Valli’s Spring 2013 couture collection. This collection definitely kept us on our toes in spite of the very controlled colour palette. Valli used mixed textures for visual interest, and a recurring texture throughout the collection was this trelliswork aspect, which really translated well to the nail.
These nail looks were created by Naomi and Oksana at Tips Nail Bar. Pretty insane skills, right?!
